El Grito, 15 de septiembre, Día de la Independencia de México

El Grito de Dolores (más conocido como El Grito, el Grito de Independencia) que se celebra cada año en la noche entre el 15 y el 16 de septiembre es una fiesta mexicana por excelencia, es la noche en que todos los ciudadanos de México celebran su independencia de los conquistadores españoles.

Desde la llegada de Hernán Cortés en 1521 y la conquista de la zona, lo que hoy es México se llamó Nueva España.

Influenciados por los conceptos establecidos por filósofos franceses como Rousseau, Voltaire y Montesquieu y la Guerra de Independencia de los Estados Unidos, los criollos (descendientes de españoles nacidos en América) que eran tratados como sujetos de segunda, decidieron iniciar un levantamiento.

A las 5:00 am del 16 de septiembre de 1810, el Cura Miguel Hidalgo, acompañado de varios otros cómplices, Ignacio Allende, Doña Josefina Ortiz de Domínguez, tocaron las campanas de su pequeña iglesia en el pueblo ahora llamado Dolores Hidalgo, llamando a todos a luchar por la libertad, lo que se conoce como “El Grito de Dolores” (el anuncio, o grito, de Dolores). Uno de los momentos cruciales en la historia de México.

Se celebra todos los años en las plazas (plaza o zócalo) de las principales ciudades del país. Con dos días de fiesta tradicional mexicana y con fuegos artificiales, desfiles, juegos, discursos, todo tipo de comida mexicana y mucha diversión para locales y visitantes.

Septiembre es el mes de México y las calles de todo el país se adornan con banderas de papel (o plástico) y guirnaldas de colores, lo que localmente se conoce como “papel picado”. En cada esquina, hay vendedores con una llamativa variedad de banderas, globos, sombreros y molinetes, en blanco, rojo y verde, los colores nacionales. Hay banderas en las casas y en todos los edificios gubernamentales y plazas de los pueblos.

Todo comienza la tarde del 15 de septiembre, cuando los mexicanos empiezan a congregarse en la plaza y calles aledañas, sin dejar casi espacio para moverse, para poder presenciar y participar del grito. El alcalde del pueblo, quien sea en ese momento, repite, como un mantra, las mismas palabras que proclamó el cura Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla hace más de 200 años.

El último “VIVA” es coreado con gran patriotismo por todos los presentes. se toca la campana y se ondea la bandera. ¡Entonces todos cantan solemnemente el himno nacional y luego comienza la fiesta!

Los cielos se iluminan con multitud de fuegos artificiales que alegran a todos los presentes y los llenan de orgullo, sabiendo que ahora viven en un país libre e independiente.

El Grito, September 15, Mexico’s Independence Day

The Grito de Dolores (better known as El Grito, the Cry for independence) celebrated every year on the night between September 15th and 16th is a Mexican holiday par excellence, it is the night when all citizens of Mexico celebrate their independence from the Spanish conquerors.

Since the arrival of Hernán Cortés in 1521 and the conquest of the area, what is now Mexico was called New Spain.

Influenced by the concepts established by French philosophers like Rousseau, Voltaire, and Montesquieu and the USA’s War of Independence, the Criollos (Spanish descendants born in America) who were treated as second-class subjects, decided to start an uprising.

At 5:00 am on September 16, 1810, the Priest Miguel Hidalgo, accompanied by several other co-conspirators, Ignacio Allende, Doña Josefina Ortiz de Domínguez, rang the bells of his small church in the town now called Dolores Hidalgo, calling everyone to fight for freedom, which is known as “El Grito de Dolores” (the announcement, or cry, of Dolores). One of the crucial moments in Mexican history.

It is celebrated every year at town squares (plaza or zócalo) of all major cities in the country. With two days of traditional Mexican fiesta y with fireworks, parades, games, speeches, all kinds of Mexican food and lots of fun for both locals and visitors.

September is the month of Mexico and streets are decorated across the country with paper flags (or plastic) and colorful garlands, which is locally called “papel picado”. On each corner, there are vendors with an eye-catching assortment of flags, balloons, hats, and pinwheels, in white, red, and green, the National colors. There are flags on the houses and all government buildings and town squares.

It all starts on the afternoon of September 15th, when mexicans start to gather on the square and surrounding streets, leaving almost no room to move, so they can witness and participate in the grito. The town mayor, whoever it is at the time, repeats, like a mantra, the same words that the priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla proclaimed over 200 years ago.

The last “VIVA” is chanted with great patriotism by all those present. the bell is rung and the flag is waved. Then everyone solemnly sings the national anthem and then the party starts!

The heavens are lit by a multitude of fireworks that brighten everyone present and fill them with pride, knowing that they now live in a free and independent country.
